CONSIDERATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH SUPPORT NEEDS

Eva de Gosztonyi

When working with students living with disability or support needs there is often a lively discussion about how much help a child should be given. How does one know if one is doing too much or too little? This presentation will explore the ins and outs of our role as adults with the children and youth in our care. We will look at when to help and when to hold back and how to tell which is the better response. It is not always easy to make the right call and that is OK. Then we will explore in more detail why some students are resistant to our help and why some are reluctant learners or unmotivated to try new things. As always children are seen through the lens of maturation, vulnerability and attachment. The interventions that I will suggest are meant to help students develop autonomy while still encouraging them to stay in a “trusting dependence” with the adults who care for them.

Social Emotional Learning Vs. Nurturing Emotional Health and Growth: What's the difference? Catherine Korah

The focus on teaching youth about managing their emotions has never been more prominent in our schools. While acknowledging emotions in an educational setting is a commendable start, there is still much to uncover about the core of emotional health and maturity, as well as how to cultivate the conditions necessary for their development. Drawing on Dr. Neufeld's synthesis of the Science of Emotion, we will explore the five indispensable steps essential to nurturing emotional health and maturity. Throughout the session, we will examine the conducive conditions required for this journey, empowering educators to identify and address impediments to emotional maturation while providing invaluable support to students as they ascend towards emotional maturity.
